Named in 1980 by Hubert Bari, Fabien Cesbron, François Permingeat, and Francois Pillard in honor of Pierre Fluck [b. October 29, 1947], Louis Pasteur University, Strasbourg, and later Universite de Haute-Alsace, France, who discovered the first specimen of the species.
