A variety of Muscovite
Name introduced by Breithaupt in 1865 and characterized by Penfield in 1893 (vide Knurr and Bailey, 1986). Placed by W. T. Schaller (1950) as an intermediate between leucophyllite (now a synonym of aluminoceladonite) and muscovite. A study of Knurr and Bailey (1986) showed that alurgite, treated as Mn-bearing muscovite-2_M_1, contains trivalent manganese (in contrast to "manganophyllite" that contains divalent Mn).
Visually indistinguishable from Mn-bearing phlogopite.
