Tetrahedrite Group (original) (raw)
Formula:
M2(A6)M1(B4 C2)X3(D4)S1(Y12)S2(Z)
A = Cu+, Ag+, ☐;
note that A6 can also be a metal-metal bonded (hence charge deficient) [Ag6]4+ cluster (i.e. as in kenoargentotetrahedrite-(Fe));
B = Cu+, Ag+;
C = Zn2+, Fe2+, Hg2+, Cd2+, Mn2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Cu+, Fe3+;
D = Sb3+, As3+, Bi3+, Te4+;
Y = S2-, Se2-;
Z = S2-, Se2-, ☐.
The tetrahedrite group is currently (as of 2024) divided into ten different subgroups on the basis of the A, B, D, and Y constituents. The nature of the dominant C constituent is made explicit using a hyphenated suffix between parentheses.
The new nomenclature and classification of the tetrahedrite group was approved by the IMA in 2019 (proposal 18-K) and published by Biagioni et al. (2020).
A Bi-dominant composition, which probably represents a new species, has been reported by Gołębiowska et al. (2012).
