Named in honor of Yuan Fuli (袁复礼) (31 December 1893, Xushui District, Hebei, China - 22 May 1987, Beijing, China), geologist and professor, to commemorate 100 years after his birth. He was a pioneer in Chinese geomorphology and Quaternary geology, and a founding member of the Chinese Geological Society.
