Unnamed (Iron Carbonitride) (original) (raw)

A material that is NOT an approved mineral species

author's formula: Fe9(N0.8C0.4)2

Another Fe nitride after the already known species: roaldite and siderazot.

Found as grain, 6 x 7 microns in size, within inclusions in lower-mantle diamond.

Co-described with associated 'Unnamed (Iron Nitride I)', 'Unnamed (Iron Nitride II)', 'Unnamed (Iron Carbide)', silicon carbide (possibly moissanite), Mn-rich xieite, and other oxide(s). Other, earlier phases coexisting, are nyerereite, nahcolite, calcite, and periclase.

The phase is among a solid solution(s) thay may be described as M5(C,N)3 - M23(C,N)6, with M/(C/N) ratio in the 1.65 to 3.98 range.

Likely formed due to infiltration of liquid metal (with some lighter elements), coming from the outer core to the D" layer.
