Originally studied by R. J. Tracy, Reilly, L. K., and Skinner, B. J. (1987) and R. J. Tracy (1991) and called anandite, despite a complete chemical analysis with a different chemical composition than accepted anandite. Tracy (1991) suggested: "The several compositional distinctions between the present micas and previously described barian biotite include the presence of substantial contents of Mn,
Zn, and Cl in the Sterling Hill micas and the absence in them of S, which is typical of anandite. Zn and Cl contents appear to be uniquely high, but Mn contents are less than those of barian phlogopite from Langban (Frondel and Ito, 1968). In fact, the high Cl content of the anandite from Sterling Hill (up to 1.0-1.2 Cl per 12 anion formula) makes them 50-60% of the chlorian end-member and may qualify the most Cl-rich as a new species.", but a proposal was not made.
In 1999, new rules on mica nomenclature were introduced which formalized the naming of (OH, F, Cl, etc.)-bearing end-members and other aspects of micas. Fleet, et al. (2003) named the mineral of Tracy, et al. (1987) and Tracy (1991), "chloroferrokinoshitalite." In 2014, Sharygin V. V., Kryvdik S. G., Karmanov N. S., Nigmatulina E. N., studied similar micas in Ukraine, using Ba(Fe#2+#)^3(Al^2Si^2O^10)(Cl)^2 for the chlorine-dominant ferrokinoshitalite. To date, the name chloroferrokinoshitalite has not been proposed to the IMA for a vote as a new species.
