1 κύριος ἔκτισεν ἐκ γῆς ἄνθρωπον 2 καὶ πάλιν ἀπέστρεψεν αὐτὸν εἰς αὐτήν 3 ἡμέρας ἀριθμοῦ καὶ καιρὸν ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς ἐξουσίαν τῶν ἐ{P'} αὐτῆς κα{Q'} ἑαυτὸν ἐνέδυσεν αὐτοὺς ἰσχὺν καὶ κα{T'} εἰκόνα αὐτοῦ ἐποίησεν αὐτούς 4 ἔθηκεν τὸν φόβον αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ πάσης σαρκὸς καὶ κατακυριεύειν θηρίων καὶ πετεινῶν 5 διαβούλιον καὶ γλῶσσαν καὶ ὀφθαλμούς ὦτα καὶ καρδίαν ἔδωκεν διανοεῖσθαι αὐτοῖς 6 ἐπιστήμην συνέσεως ἐνέπλησεν αὐτοὺς καὶ ἀγαθὰ καὶ κακὰ ὑπέδειξεν αὐτοῖς 7 ἔθηκεν τὸν ὀφθαλμὸν αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὰς καρδίας αὐτῶν δεῖξαι αὐτοῖς τὸ μεγαλεῖον τῶν ἔργων αὐτοῦ 8 καὶ ὄνομα ἁγιασμοῦ αἰνέσουσιν ἵνα διηγῶνται τὰ μεγαλεῖα τῶν ἔργων αὐτοῦ 9 προσέθηκεν αὐτοῖς ἐπιστήμην καὶ νόμον ζωῆς ἐκληροδότησεν αὐτοῖς 10 διαθήκην αἰῶνος ἔστησεν με{T'} αὐτῶν καὶ τὰ κρίματα αὐτοῦ ὑπέδειξεν αὐτοῖς 11 μεγαλεῖον δόξης εἶδον οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ αὐτῶν καὶ δόξαν φωνῆς αὐτοῦ ἤκουσεν τὸ οὖς αὐτῶν καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς προσέχετε ἀπὸ παντὸς ἀδίκου 12 καὶ ἐνετείλατο αὐτοῖς ἑκάστῳ περὶ τοῦ πλησίον
1 Man, too, God created out of the earth, fashioning him after his own likeness, 2 and gave him, too, earth to be his burying-place, for all the divine power that clothed him; 3 man, too, should have his allotted toll of years, his season of maturity, and should have power over all else on earth; 4 no living thing, beast or bird, that should not live in awe of him and be subject to his rule. 5 To him and to that partner of his, created like himself and out of himself, God gave will and speech and sight and hearing; gave them a heart to reason with, and filled them with power of discernment; 6 spirit itself should be within their ken, their hearts should be all sagacity. What evil was, what good, he made plain to them; 7 gave them his own eyes to see with, so that they should keep his marvellous acts in view, 8 praise that holy name of his, boast of his wonders, tell the story of his renowned deeds. 9 Warnings, too, he gave them; the law that brings life should be a cherished heirloom; 10 and so he made a covenant with them which should last for ever; claim and award of his he would make known to them. 11 Their eyes should see him in visible majesty, their ears catch the echo of his majestic voice. Keep your hands clear, he told them, of all wrong-doing, 12 and gave each man a duty towards his neighbour.

consilium, et linguam, et oculos, et aures,

Creavit illis scientiam spiritus,
sensu implevit cor illorum,
et mala et bona ostendit illis. 7
Posuit oculum suum super corda illorum,
ostendere illis magnalia operum suorum: 8
ut nomen sanctificationis collaudent,
et gloriari in mirabilibus illius;
ut magnalia enarrent operum ejus. 9
Addidit illis disciplinam,
et legem vitæ hæreditavit illos. 10
Testamentum æternum constituit cum illis,
et justitiam et judicia sua ostendit illis. 11
Et magnalia honoris ejus vidit oculus illorum,
et honorem vocis audierunt aures illorum.
Et dixit illis: Attendite ab omni iniquo. 12
Et mandavit illis unicuique de proximo suo.
19 μετὰ ταῦτα ἐξαναστήσεται καὶ ἀνταποδώσει αὐτοῖς καὶ τὸ ἀνταπόδομα αὐτῶν εἰς κεφαλὴν αὐτῶν ἀποδώσει 20 πλὴν μετανοοῦσιν ἔδωκεν ἐπάνοδον καὶ παρεκάλεσεν ἐκλείποντας ὑπομονήν 21 ἐπίστρεφε ἐπὶ κύριον καὶ ἀπόλειπε ἁμαρτίας 22 δεήθητι κατὰ πρόσωπον καὶ σμίκρυνον πρόσκομμα 23 ἐπάναγε ἐπὶ ὕψιστον καὶ ἀπόστρεφε ἀπὸ ἀδικίας καὶ σφόδρα μίσησον βδέλυγμα ὑψίστῳ τίς αἰνέσει ἐν ᾅδου 24 25 ἀντὶ ζώντων καὶ διδόντων ἀνθομολόγησιν 26 ἀπὸ νεκροῦ ὡς μηδὲ ὄντος ἀπόλλυται ἐξομολόγησις 27 ζῶν καὶ ὑγιὴς αἰνέσει τὸν κύριον 28 ὡς μεγάλη ἡ ἐλεημοσύνη τοῦ κυρίου καὶ ἐξιλασμὸς τοῖς ἐπιστρέφουσιν ἐ{P'} αὐτόν
19 … A day will come when he rouses himself and requites them, one by one, for their misdoing, overwhelms them in the depths of earth. 20 Yet, to such as repent, he grants the means of acquittal, and makes their fainting hearts strong to endure; for them, too, he has a share in his promised reward. 21 Turn back to the Lord, and let thy sins be; 22 make thy prayer before him, and rid thyself of the peril in thy path. 23 Come back to the Lord, from wrong-doing turn away, and thy foul deeds hate; 24 in all his decrees and awards own God just, stand in thy appointed place to make intercession to him, the most High, 25 and take thy part with a race of men sanctified, living men that still give thanks to God.[2] 26 Linger not in the false path of wickedness; give thanks while breath is in thee; the dead breathe no more, give thanks no more. 27 Thanks while yet thou livest, thanks while health and strength are still with thee, to praise God and to take pride in all his mercies! 28 The Lord’s mercy, that is so abundant, the pardon that is ever theirs who come back to him!

Et postea resurget,
et retribuet illis retributionem, unicuique in caput ipsorum,
et convertet in interiores partes terræ. 20
Pœnitentibus autem dedit viam justitiæ,
et confirmavit deficientes sustinere,
et destinavit illis sortem veritatis. 21
Convertere ad Dominum, et relinque peccata tua:
22
precare ante faciem Domini, et minue offendicula. 23
Revertere ad Dominum, et avertere ab injustitia tua,
et nimis odito execrationem: 24
et cognosce justitias et judicia Dei,
et sta in sorte propositionis, et orationis altissimi Dei. 25
In partes vade sæculi sancti,
cum vivis et dantibus confessionem Deo. 26
Non demoreris in errore impiorum:
ante mortem confitere:
a mortuo, quasi nihil, perit confessio. 27
Confiteberis vivens,
vivus et sanus confiteberis:
et laudabis Deum,
et gloriaberis in miserationibus illius. 28
Quam magna misericordia Domini,
et propitiatio illius convertentibus ad se!
[1] It seems possible that this verse has been misplaced, since it breaks into the connexion of thought between verse 17 and verse 19.
[2] vv. 24, 25: The Latin here reads very unnaturally, and is perhaps the rendering of a corrupt Hebrew original. In the first half of verse 25, the Greek text has, ‘Who will give praise to the most High in the grave?’ The word rendered ‘give thanks’, here and in the following verses, may also, according to Hebrew usage, mean ‘confess’. But cf. Is. 38.19.
[3] Literally, ‘it is not possible that all things should be in man’.
