Australia Shires (original) (raw)
Australia is divided into states and territories. The generic term for the next level down is "local government areas". Because of the stark contrast between rural and urban Australia, local government areas come in many different forms. They have the status of shires, cities, towns, and so on. The majority are shires, so I'll use the word "shire" in place of "local government area". Some states are completely divided into shires, but some states still have unincorporated areas. In Northern Territory, some shires don't even have definite boundaries. In most states, I've found different sources that disagree on the list of shires. I have tried to select the most recent and most commonly used subdivision for each state and territory. Note that no subdivisions are listed for Australian Capital Territory, Coral Sea Islands Territory, or the remote islands.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has defined theAustralian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC) 1999 
(this document includes detailed maps). It consists of six "structures", or hierarchical sets of divisions for statistical reporting. The structure that most interests us is called the Local Government Area structure. It consists of the states and territories on the top level, followed by local government areas (LGA), statistical local areas (SLA), and census collection districts (CD) at the lowest level. The ABS states that the LGAs cover only that part of the Australian territory which is in the jurisdiction of some incorporated local government. They leave out northern South Australia, most of Northern Territory, and all of Australian Capital Territory, Jervis Bay, Christmas Island (Indian Ocean), and Cocos (Keeling) Islands.
