Alexander Macdonell, bis 1838 Eigenschreibung McDonell, (* 17. Juli 1762 in , Schottisches Hochland; † 14. Januar 1840 in Dumfries) war ein schottischer römisch-katholischer Geistlicher und der erste Bischof von Kingston in Kanada. Er war sowohl in Schottland als auch in Kanada politisch aktiv. (de) Bishop Alexander Macdonell (17 July 1762 – 14 January 1840) was the first Roman Catholic bishop of Kingston, Upper Canada. He was born in Glen Urquhart, Inchlaggan, Scotland and served a chaplain with the Glengarry Fencibles during the Irish Rebellion of 1798. His presence insured that the regiment "distinguished itself by its humanity". When the regiment was demobilized, most of the soldiers found themselves unemployed and destitute. He led them to Canada, where they received a grant of land for their service. When Macdonell arrived in 1804, he found three priests and three churches in Upper Canada. By his energy and perseverance he induced a considerable immigration to the province, and left at his death forty-eight churches attended by thirty priests, plus a seminary and a college. Il vint au Canada en 1803, et fut immédiatement employé aux missions de Saint-Raphaël du Haut-Canada. En 1807, l'évêque de Québec lui envoya des lettres de vicaire général, et, le 12 janvier 1819, il fut nommé par Pie VII, évêque de , en Mésopotamie, suffragant et auxiliaire de l'évêque de Québec pour la province du Haut-Canada. Il fut consacré dans l'église des Ursulines de Québec le 31 décembre 1820. Le Haut-Canada ayant été érigé en évêché par le pape Léon XII, le 14 février 1826, McDonell fut pourvu de ce siège, sous le titre d'évêque de Kingston. Thomas Weld avait été nommé son coadjuteur sous le titre d'évêque d'Amycles in partibus ; mais, ce prélat ayant été promu au cardinalat, le pape Grégoire XVI nomma Rémi Gaulin coadjuteur de Kingston. Alexander McDonell mourut à , le 14 janvier 1840, âgé de 78 ans et demi. Ses restes, déposés à Édimbourg dans la chapelle de Sainte-Marguerite, furent transportés dans la le 26 septembre 1861. (fr) |
