William George Bunter is a fictional schoolboy created by Charles Hamilton using the pen name Frank Richards. He features in stories set at Greyfriars School, a fictional English public school in Kent, originally published in the boys' weekly story paper The Magnet from 1908 to 1940. The character has appeared in novels, on television, in stage plays and in comic strips. He is in the Lower Fourth form of Greyfriars School, known as the Remove, whose members are 14–15 years of age. Time is frozen in the Greyfriars stories; although the reader sees the passing of the seasons, the characters' ages do not change and they remain in the same year groups. Originally a minor character, Bunter's role was expanded over the years with his antics being heavily used in the stories to provide comic relief and to drive forward the plots. Bunter's defining characteristics are his greediness and overweight appearance. His character is, in many respects, that of a highly obnoxious anti-hero. As well as his gluttony, he is obtuse, lazy, racist, nosy, deceitful, slothful, self-important and conceited. These defects, however, are not recognised by Bunter. In his own mind, he is an exemplary character: handsome, talented and aristocratic; and he dismisses most of those around him as "beasts". The negative sides of Bunter are offset by several genuine redeeming features; such as his tendency, from time to time, to display courage in aid of others; his ability to be generous, on the rare occasions when he has food or cash; and above all his very real love and concern for his mother. All these, combined with Bunter's cheery optimism, his comically transparent untruthfulness and inept attempts to conceal his antics from his schoolmasters and schoolfellows, combine to make a character that succeeds in being highly entertaining but which rarely attracts the reader's lasting sympathy. Adolescent obèse glouton, avide, raciste, paresseux et orgueilleux, Bunter, doté d'un optimiste et d'une confiance en lui à toute épreuve, se croit talentueux, élégant et aristocratique. Sa démesure en on fait un personnage très populaire au Royaume-Uni. En 1939, Richards commence à adapter en bande dessinée les aventures de Billy Bunter avec le dessinateur (en) dans (en), un an avant l'arrêt de Magnet. (en) succède rapidement à Chapman ; son style rond apprécié des jeunes lecteurs font de Billy Bunter un « véritable phénomène de société ». À son décès en 1958, Reg Parlett lui succède et poursuit la série jusqu'en 1984 dans Knockout puis Valiant et (en), dont la disparition signe l'arrêt de Billy Bunter. Le succès de la bande dessinée et la fin des rationnements de papier poussent Hamilton à reprendre les versions littéraires du personnage : 38 nouveaux romans sont publiés de 1947 à 1967, tandis que la BBC diffusé 52 épisodes de (en) entre 1952 et 1961. Billie Turf is een stripfiguur. Zijn bijnaam is "het dikste studentje ter wereld". In de jaren zestig en zeventig verschenen de avonturen van Billie Turf in Sjors en later nog eens in Eppo en Eppo Wordt Vervolgd. In de jaren zeventig hebben de strips ook in Libelle gestaan. De strip is een vertaling van de Engelse strip Billy Bunter. Deze strip was gebaseerd op verhalen van Frank Richards (pseudoniem van ). Het eerste verhaal van Billy Bunter verscheen in 1908 in het eerste nummer van The Magnet Library. In de Nederlandse vertaling van die boeken, in de jaren 20, heette het personage Billy Blunder. Vanaf 1939 verscheen in Engeland ook een strip van Billy Bunter, in Knock-out Comic. Billie zit op een kostschool. Hij heeft een hekel aan school en lichaamsbeweging en is dol op taartjes en lekker eten. Zijn antwoorden op proefwerkvragen luiden meestal: "weet niet", of: "onbekend". Andere figuren uit de strip zijn meester Kwel en Bessie Turf, het al even dikke zusje van Billie die ook een eigen stripserie had. Meester Kwel heeft de gewoonte om na het lezen van Billies proefwerkantwoorden Billie met een Spaans rietje op zijn omvangrijke achterwerk te slaan.
