Reynaud Des Marchais, Chevalier des Marchais was a French cartographer, navigator, and captain of a slave ship who travelled extensively in the west coast of Africa, the West Indies and the northwest coast of South America between 1704 and 1727, under service to the King of France. His maps and manuscripts were published posthumously by Père J. B. Labat in Amsterdam in 1730–31. Des Marchais mapped the Kingdom of Whydah in 1725, two years before its capture by Dahomey; he also provided the most detailed description of the coronation of King Haffon which he dated from the same year.

Egli viaggiò soprattutto nella costa dell'Africa occidentale, nelle Indie occidentali e nella costa nord-occidentale del Sudamerica nel periodo tra il 1704 ed il 1727, al servizio del Re di Francia. Le sue mappe e i suoi manoscritti furono pubblicati ad Amsterdam da Père J. B. Labat nel 1730-31. Nel 1725 Des Marchais viaggiò nell'Africa occidentale, dove scoprì la Synsepalum dulcificum, pianta dalle bacche particolari che grazie ad una sostanza in esse contenute, poi chiamata Miracolina, fa percepire come dolce qualsiasi alimento. In quel viaggio mappò il (nell'odierno Benin), due anni prima della sua annessione da parte del Regno di Dahomey, descrivendo anche in modo dettagliato l'incoronazione di re Haffon. (it)
