Chirotherium ist eine Spurenfossilgattung fünffingeriger bzw. -zehiger (pentadactyler) Trittsiegel und entsprechender Fährten von Landwirbeltieren (Tetrapoda). In der ethologischen Spurenklassifikation nach Seilacher handelt es sich daher um ein Repichnium (Bewegungsspur) bzw. um ein Cursichnium (Schreitspur) in der Untergliederung der Bewegungsspuren nach Müller. Chirotherium ist typisch für terrestrische Sandsteine der Unter- und Mitteltrias (ca. 250 bis 230 mya) und wurde vermutlich von rein landlebenden Vorfahren der heutigen Krokodile, den „Rauisuchiern“, verursacht. Chirotherium bzw. die Typusart Ch. barthii ist das erste nach Linné’scher Nomenklatur benannte Spurenfossil überhaupt. Als „Chirotherien“ werden informell neben den zahlreichen beschriebenen Chirotherium-Arten auch morphologisch ähnliche Spurengattungen, wie Brachychirotherium, Isochirotherium, Protochirotherium oder Synaptichnium bezeichnet. Chirotherium tracks were first found in 1834 in Lower Triassic sandstone (Buntsandstein) in Thuringia, Germany, dating from about 243 million years ago (mya). The creatures who made the footprints and tracks were probably pseudosuchian archosaurs related to the ancestors of the crocodiles.
