Gegründet wurde sie von John Newton (1725–1807), der selbst viele Jahre lang als Kapitän verschiedener Sklavenschiffe gearbeitet hatte und über seinen Sinneswandel später das Kirchenlied Amazing Grace schrieb. Der Name leitet sich von der südlich von London gelegenen Ortschaft Clapham ab (heute ein Bezirk im Südwesten Londons). In Clapham lebten die prominentesten und einflussreichsten Mitglieder der Gruppe, William Wilberforce und Henry Thornton. Die Gruppe benannte sich nicht selbst, die Bezeichnung als Sekte (damals noch wertneutral als Abspaltung von einer der großen Kirchen verstanden!) bzw. ironisch als Heilige (Saints) wurde ihr als Spottname von zeitgenössischen Gegnern verliehen. Die Mitglieder, die allesamt prominente und wohlhabende Anglikaner waren, traten für eine Abschaffung der Sklaverei und des Sklavenhandels sowie für eine Reform des Strafvollzugssystems ein. Unterstützung fand die Gruppe unter anderen beim Londoner Bischof Beilby Porteus. Weitere prominente Mitglieder waren Granville Sharp, Jurist und Gründer der britischen abolitionistischen Bewegung und William Smith, Bürgermeister von Norwich und Großvater von Florence Nightingale, sowie John Venn. Die Gruppe gab eine eigene Zeitschrift heraus, den Christian Observer. Hauptherausgeber war Zachary Macaulay, der spätere koloniale Gouverneur von Sierra Leone. Einige Mitglieder waren auch an der Gründung verschiedener missionarischer Organisationen beteiligt, darunter der britischen Bibelgesellschaft und der Church Mission Society.
