베트남의 기후는 열대계절풍으로 5월부터 10월까지는 남서몬순이 불어 많은 비를 몰고 오며, 11월부터 4월까지는 동북몬순으로 건조기후가 된다. 북부 일부 지역은 사계절이 나타나지만 남부지방은 일년내내 습도가 높으며 여름에 비가 집중적으로 내린다. 중부지방에는 베트남에서 가장 건조한 지역과 가장 습한 지역이 자리잡고 있다. 산악지방은 삼각주나 해안저지대보다 대체로 기온이 낮고 비가 더 많이 온다.

The diverse topography, long latitude (Vietnam spans over 15° of latitude), and influences from the South China Sea lead to climatic conditions varying significantly between regions. Vietnam is a country located in the tropics, however Northern Vietnam, including Hanoi, is considered a subtropical region by Köppen climate classification and has times to be influenced by cold waves from the Northeast. Cold waves also influence northern part of Central Vietnam. In general here, Vietnam is divided into 2 parts/Northern-Southern by determination about climate-weather. The northern region experiences a monsoonal and warm temperate climate (Cwb) with four distinct seasons (spring, summer, autumn, and winter) while in more southern areas (areas south of the Hải Vân Pass), the climate is tropical monsoon (Aw) with only two seasons (rainy and dry). In addition, a temperate climate exists in mountainous areas, which are found in Sa Pa and Da Lat, while a more continental climate exists in Lai Châu Province and Sơn La Province. 20% of Vietnam's total surface area is low-elevation coastal area, making the country highly vulnerable to climate change effects and the rising sea levels in particular. Dans les régions montagneuses (Dalat, Sapa), le climat est plus sec et les hivers peuvent être rigoureux. Durant la saison sèche qui correspond à hiver boréal, c'est-à-dire entre novembre et avril, les vents de la mousson viennent du nord-est, le long de la côte chinoise et à travers le golfe du Tonkin où ils engrangent beaucoup d'humidité. La saison sèche ne l'est donc qu'en comparaison avec la saison des pluies.
