Les quatre Illes Comores que jeuen pel mig del Canal de Moçambic entre Madagascar i Àfrica de l'est són una única ecoregió, els boscos d'Illes Comores. Aquestes illes volcàniques són riques en flora i fauna amb espècies endèmiques que inclouen quatre espècies d'ocell en perill d'extinció que viuen en el Mont Karthala, el gran volcà actiu de l'Illa Gran Comora. These include four main islands: Grande Comore, Anjouan and Mohéli, of the Union of the Comoros, and Mayotte, a department and region of France. These volcanic islands are rich in wildlife with endemic species including four endangered bird species living on Mount Karthala, the large active volcano on Grande Comore. Верхние части склонов гор покрыты густыми тропическими лесами, ниже располагаются саванны и кустарниковые заросли. Флора и фауна схожа с островом Мадагаскар, но существует более 500 видов растений, эндемичных для Коморских Островов. Из примерно 2000 местных видов растений, в том числе 175 папоротников и 72 видов орхидей, 33 % являются эндемиками Коморских Островов.
