Derbendcis or Derbentler were the most important and largest Ottoman military auxiliary constabulary units usually responsible for guarding important roads, bridges, fords or mountain passes. Usually, the population of an entire village near some important pass would be assigned with derbendci status in exchange for tax exemptions.

B. des Balkangebirges) bewachten. Ganze Dörfer – genauer die männliche Bevölkerung – waren dem Osmanischen Reich gegenüber verpflichtet, Hilfstruppen zu stellen. Diese Truppen aus den eroberten Völkern mussten für die Osmanen Wege und Gebirgspässe in der Nähe bewachen, z. T. auch Brücken instand halten und Reisende, Händler und osmanische Truppen über gefährliche Wegabschnitte eskortieren. Dafür waren sie von einigen Steuern befreit (Blutzoll, Zehnt) und hatten das Recht, Waffen zu tragen, mussten sich ihren Derwendschi-Status jedoch vom Sultan kaufen. In der europäischen Türkei waren die Derwendschi meistens alteingesessene Christen, deren Völker die jeweilige Gegend schon vor der osmanischen Eroberung bewohnt hatten. Gemäß Sultanerlass (Ferman) hatte kein Muslim das Recht in einem solchen, von Ungläubigen bewohnten, Dorf zu übernachten. Il nome deriva dalla parola di lingua persiana "Dar-band" che significa ad un tempo "cancello" e "usciere". Il territorio oggetto dell'attività di sorveglianza dei dervenci (di fatto una sorta di gendarmeria) era appunto il "derven".Dal termine del XVIII secolo, l'autorità centrale costantinopolitana affidò la gestione dei vari derven sparsi sul territorio imperiale ad un ufficio precipuo, il Derbendat Başbuğluğu (lett.
