Drop D tuning is an alternative form of guitar tuning in which the lowest (sixth) string is tuned down from the usual E of standard tuning by one whole step to D. So where standard tuning is E2A2D3G3B3E4 (EADGBe), drop D is D2A2D3G3B3E4 (DADGBe). Drop D tuning, as well as other lowered altered tunings, are often used with the electric guitar in heavy metal music. It is also used in blues, country, folk (often with acoustic guitar), and classical guitar.

Die Gitarre klingt voller; ein D-Akkord ist nun mit wenig Mühe über alle sechs Saiten zu spielen. Gegenüber der Standardstimmung ändern sich die Griffe nur wenig. Die erste Saite darf mitunter nicht mitgespielt werden. Eine Variation dieser Stimmung besteht darin, alle Saiten zusätzlich um einen oder mehrere Halbtöne tiefer zu stimmen. Die Dropped-D-Stimmung wird in der Rockmusik und im Metal eingesetzt, insbesondere in den Bereichen Heavy Metal, Stoner Rock, Crossover, Metalcore und Nu Metal. Ein bekannter klassischer Gitarrist und Komponist, der einen Großteil seiner Stücke in Dropped-D schreibt, ist der in Deutschland lebende David Qualey. Certains bassistes utilisent également le Drop D (ce qui donne donc ré-la-ré-sol/DADG, généralement pour les mêmes raisons que les guitaristes. Ce sont habituellement les bassistes de groupes de metal les plus modernes qui utilisent ce style d'accordage (Dave Farrell de LP, Oliver Riedel de Rammstein, etc.) Neil Young qui utilise fréquemment cet accordage joue aussi parfois en double drop D (Ré La Ré Sol Si Ré).
