L'ecotoxicitat és un concepte que uneix els de l'ecologia i la toxicologia per a fer referència a l'objecte d'estudi de l'ecotoxicologia, que són els agents biològics, químics o físics que afecten part o la totalitat d'ecosistemes. Inclou els aspectes sanitaris i els ecològics. Pot ser a causa de l'acció de l'ésser humà (causes antropogèniques) o bé ocórrer a la natura amb una tal densitat, concentració o quantitat prou alta com per a afectar la bioquímica o fisiologia natural, el comportament i les interaccions dels organismes vius que hi habiten.

Such stressors might occur in the natural environment at densities, concentrations or levels high enough to disrupt the natural biochemistry, physiology, behaviour and interactions of the living organisms that comprise the ecosystem. Ecotoxicology has been defined as, "the branch of toxicology concerned with the study of toxic effects, caused by natural or synthetic pollutants, to the constituents of ecosystems, animal (including human), vegetable and microbial, in an integral context". (en) Ekotoksyna – substancja lub czynnik mająca szkodliwy wpływ na środowisko naturalne. Głównymi przyczynami obecności ekotoksyn w środowisku są: przemysł, chemizacja rolnictwa czy czynniki związane z rozwojem cywilizacyjnym, takie jak silne pola elektromagnetyczne występujące w pobliżu linii przesyłowych oraz hałas. Naturalnymi źródłami są między innymi erupcje wulkanów, które emitują duże ilości związków siarki, chloru oraz pyłu. Substancje wprowadzane do środowiska przez działalność człowieka to na przykład: pył, dwutlenek siarki, WWA, metale ciężkie, nawozy i pestycydy. Najtrwalsze substancje organiczne zagrażające środowisku zostały ujęte w Konwencji sztokholmskiej w sprawie trwałych zanieczyszczeń organicznych. (pl) |
