- Edward Cary Walthall (* 4. April 1831 in Richmond, Virginia; † 21. April 1898 in Washington, D.C.) war Rechtsanwalt, General im Heer der Konföderation während des Amerikanischen Bürgerkriegs und Politiker der Demokratischen Partei. Walthall zog als Kind mit seiner Familie aus Virginia nach Mississippi. Nach dem Schulbesuch in Holly Springs, Mississippi studierte er Jura und wurde 1852 in die Anwaltskammer aufgenommen. Er arbeitete bis 1856 als Anwalt in , Mississippi. Im selben Jahr wurde er zum Bezirksstaatsanwalt für den zehnten Gerichtsdistrikt von Mississippi gewählt und drei Jahre später in diesem Amt bestätigt. Während des Bürgerkrieges diente Edward Walthall auf der Seite der Südstaaten zunächst als Leutnant. Später wurde er zum Oberstleutnant, Oberst und Brigadegeneral befördert, ehe er schließlich bei Kriegsende zum Generalmajor befördert wurde. Nach dem Krieg kehrte er in Coffeeville in seinen Beruf zurück, den er ab 1871 in Grenada, Mississippi ausübte. 1885 unterbrach er seine juristische Laufbahn, als er nach dem Rücktritt von Lucius Lamar in den US-Senat berufen wurde. Diesem gehörte er nach einer Wiederwahl 1889 bis zum 24. Januar 1894 an, als er sein Mandat wegen gesundheitlicher Probleme niederlegte. Während seiner Zeit im Senat war er Vorsitzender des Militärausschusses. Noch im selben Jahr trat Edward Walthall erneut zur Wahl an und siegte; am 4. März 1895 kehrte er in den Senat zurück. Er starb während seiner Amtszeit am 21. April 1898, kurz nach seinem 67. Geburtstag. Zu seinen Ehren wurde das Walthall County im Staat Mississippi nach ihm benannt. (de)

- Edward Cary Walthall (Richmond, 4 aprile 1831 – Washington, 21 aprile 1898) è stato un politico statunitense.Procuratore di distretto, divenne maggior generale nell'esercito degli Stati Confederati durante la guerra di secessione. Dopo la guerra continuò la sua attività di avvocato per poi sedere al Senato degli Stati Uniti come rappresentante del Mississippi. Avvocato praticante a Coffeyville (Mississippi), Walthall entrò al servizio delle forze confederate nel 1861, come tenente del 15º Fanteria del Mississippi, per poi essere rapidamente promosso Tenente colonnello e colonnello. Già nel dicembre 1862 divenne brigadier generale e nel giugno 1864 maggior generale. Combatté valorosamente a Missionary Ridge e coprì la ritirata di John B. Hood a Nashville, dove riuscì a evitare che il generale unionista George H. Thomas catturasse l'Armata del Tennessee. Nel marzo 1865 ebbe il comando dei "Corpi di Stewart" dell'Armata del Tennessee fino alla riorganizzazione del 9 aprile, quando tornò al comando della sua divisione. Han blev 1856 distriktsåklagare. Han deltog sedan i inbördeskriget i konfederationens armé. Han avancerade från löjtnant till generalmajor under kriget. Efter kriget arbetade han åter som advokat och flyttade 1871 till Grenada. Demokraten Walthall blev 1885 utnämnd till senaten efter att Lucius Q.C. Lamar hade avgått för att tillträda som inrikesminister. Walthall valdes sedan till återstoden av Lamars mandatperiod och omvaldes 1889. Han avgick 1894 och efterträddes av A.J. McLaurin. Han efterträdde följande år McLaurin som senator och avled tre år senare i ämbetet. Hans grav finns på Hillcrest Cemetery i Holly Springs. Walthall County har fått sitt namn efter Edward C. Walthall.
