Erythema annulare centrifugum (EAC), is a descriptive term for a class of skin lesion presenting redness (erythema) in a ring form (anulare) that spreads from a center (centrifugum). It was first described by Darier in 1916. Many different terms have been used to classify these types of lesions and it is still controversial on what exactly defines EAC. Some of the types include annular erythema (deep and superficial), erythema perstans, erythema gyratum perstans, erythema gyratum repens, darier erythema (deep gyrate erythema) and erythema figuratum perstans.

La plupart des manuels de dermatologie s’accordent à en décrire deux formes, mais il y a un dissensus quant à leur nature : certains auteurs pensent qu’il s’agit de deux entités pathologiques différentes). D’autres auteurs, allemands et autrichiens (Ziemer, K. Eisendle et B. Zelger) ont estimé en 2008 qu’il ne s’agit pas d’une entité clinicopathologique spécifique mais de formes de réaction de la peau qui doivent faire évoquer non pas deux mais trois entités pathologiques différentes : principalement le lupus érythémateux, une dermatite et dans certains cas un symptôme cutané de la maladie de Lyme dont l’agent (borrélies) peut parfois être mis en évidence au microscope lors des manifestations cutanées de cette borréliose.
