Fundada el segle xv pels arbanites establerts a l'Àtica, està situada molt aprop de l'antiga Èritres, que ja apareix al Catàleg de les naus de la Ilíada entre el contingent beoci. Així, mentre que la ciutat antiga feia part de Beòcia, actualment Èritres fa part de la perifèria de l'Àtica. Βρίσκονται στα βορειοδυτικά του νομού, χτισμένες σε υψόμετρο 390 μέτρων στις ανατολικές πλαγιές του Κιθαιρώνα. Αν και ανήκουν στον νομό Αττικής συνδέονται περισσότερο με το διοικητικό κέντρο της Θήβας με την οποία βρίσκονται πολύ κοντά. Με συνολικό πληθυσμό 3.326 κατοίκων αποτελούσαν έδρα ομώνυμου δήμου μέχρι το 2010, έτος κατά το οποίο με το Πρόγραμμα Καλλικράτης εντάχθηκαν στο διευρυμένο Δήμο Μάνδρας - Ειδυλλίας. Οι Ερυθρές οφείλουν το όνομά τους στην αρχαία βοιωτική πόλη των Ερυθρών που βρισκόταν στην ίδια περιοχή. Κάτοικοι μάλιστα των Ερυθρών ίδρυσαν την ομώνυμη αποικία στην Ιωνία που βρίσκεται απέναντι από τη Χίο. Το σημερινό χωριό δημιουργήθηκε τον 15ο αιώνα από Αρβανίτες που εγκαταστάθηκαν στην περιοχή και σε αυτούς οφείλει την ονομασία του, Κριεκούκι (σημαίνει στα αρβανίτικα κόκκινο κεφάλι). Στις 30/08/1927 με Διάταγμα του τότε Προέδρου της Δημοκρατίας Παύλου Κουντουριώτου, το Κριεκούκι μετονομάσθη σε Ερυθρές. It is part of Athens metropolitan area.Erythres was named after the ancient city of Erythrae, the ruins of which are located 1.5 km east of the present town. The inhabitants of Erythres are Arvanites. The Greek National Road 3 (Elefsina - Thebes - Florina) passes through Erythres. The area south of Erythres is mountainous, with the Kithaironas to the southwest and the Pastra to the southeast. The area north of Erythres is characterised by the wide, flat valley of the Boeotian river Asopos, that flows to the east along the northern border of the municipal unit. This area is dominated by farmlands. Erythres is located 5 km east of Plataies, 6 km north of Vilia, 12 km south of Thebes and 44 km northwest of Athens.
