(ar) The concept of the evolution of morality refers to the emergence of human moral behavior over the course of human evolution. Morality can be defined as a system of ideas about right and wrong conduct. In everyday life, morality is typically associated with human behavior rather than animal behavior. The emerging fields of evolutionary biology, and in particular evolutionary psychology, have argued that, despite the complexity of human social behaviors, the precursors of human morality can be traced to the behaviors of many other social animals. Sociobiological explanations of human behavior remain controversial. Social scientists have traditionally viewed morality as a construct, and thus as culturally relative, although others such as Sam Harris argue that there is an objective science of morality. (en) De evolutie van moraliteit of evolutie van (de) moraal is de evolutionaire en biologische ontwikkeling van (bepaalde aspecten van) menselijk moreel gedrag. Het draait dus om de vraag in welke mate en op welke wijze het moreel gedrag een product is van evolutionaire principes, zoals natuurlijke selectie, in de loop van de evolutie van de soort in kwestie. Onderzoek hiernaar valt te plaatsen binnen de sociobiologie, een discipline die sociale en culturele fenomenen, waaronder dus ook moreel gedrag, vanuit biologisch oogpunt wil verklaren. Het verklaringsmodel wordt vanuit evolutionair oogpunt bekeken, daarom is er meestal sprake van een tijdspanne van duizenden tot miljoenen jaren. Dit is in tegenstelling tot de biosociale theorie, waarbij het gaat om verklaringen op een korter termijn. Ook vanuit de evolutionaire psychologie, antropobiologie en de primatologie bestaan er dergelijke studies. Er bestaan ook al eerdere en gelijkaardige reflecties over de evolutie van moreel gedrag bij auteurs zoals Charles Darwin en Herbert Spencer. In het Nederlandstalig gebied heeft vooral Frans de Waal onderzoek verricht naar de evolutionaire oorsprong van moraliteit. Sociobiologische studies omtrent moraliteit bestaan enerzijds uit theoretische modellen die trachten te verklaren hoe er binnen de evolutie van een bepaalde soort geselecteerd is geweest op bepaalde vormen van moreel gedrag, zoals altruïsme of reciprociteit. Anderzijds bestaan er ook een hele reeks empirische studies over hoe bepaalde vormen van moreel gedag ook bij andere diersoorten dan de mens aanwezig zijn, met name bij sociale dieren. Daarnaast zijn er ook verscheidene vormen van kritiek geformuleerd op evolutionaire verklaringen van moreel gedrag, bijvoorbeeld vanuit de ethiek, zoals het verwijt van de naturalistische dwaling, of vanuit sociale wetenschappen, zoals de stelling dat de grote diversiteit van normen en waarden niet terug te herleiden is tot biologische principes. Het is daarom belangrijk om een onderscheid te maken tussen descriptieve- en normatieve , net zoals in de algemene ethiek. Descriptieve evolutionaire ethiek is een biologische benadering van de ethiek gebaseerd op (enkel) evolutionaire principes. Dit is bij de evolutie van moraliteit van toepassing, het gaat met name om de basisfundamenten. De normatieve evolutionaire ethiek is gericht op het bepalen van een goede of foute handeling, eveneens gebaseerd op evolutionaire principes.
