Singapore deregistered the Jehovah's Witnesses in 1972 because of their opposition to military service which is obligatory for all male citizens. A decade later, it dissolved the Unification Church for allegedly breaking up families. The Sedition Act prohibits seditious acts and speech which "promote feelings of ill-will and hostility between different races or classes of the population of Singapore," and the Maintenance of Religious Harmony Act empowers the Minister for Home Affairs to take a pre-emptive approach by issuing restraining orders against a religious leader that has committed or is attempting to commit certain acts threatening religious harmony.
