GCOS (General Comprehensive Operating Supervisor) és una família de sistemes operatius orientats cap a ordinadors centrals (mainframes). La seva primera versió va ser desenvolupada per General Electric el 1962; originalment designat GECOSE (the General Electric Comprehensive Operating Supervisor). Actualment encara s'utilitza sobre grans sistemes, encara que rares vegades, sobretot a causa de problemes d'herència. General Comprehensive Operating System (GCOS) bezeichnet eine Familie von Betriebssystemen, die für den Einsatz auf Mainframes ursprünglich als GECOS von der amerikanischen Firma General Electric programmiert und später von Honeywell weiterentwickelt wurde. Heutzutage verwenden nur noch wenige Systeme diese Software. Im Einsatz sind sie hauptsächlich wegen des Gebrauchs alter Software, die normalerweise in -Assembler, Cobol, Fortran oder ALGOL geschrieben wurden. General Comprehensive Operating System (GCOS, /ˈdʒiːkoʊs/; originally GECOS, General Electric Comprehensive Operating Supervisor) is a family of operating systems oriented toward the 36-bit GE/Honeywell mainframe computers. The original version of GCOS was developed by General Electric beginning in 1962. The operating system is still used today in its most recent versions (GCOS 7 and GCOS 8) on servers and mainframes produced by Groupe Bull, primarily through emulation, to provide continuity with legacy mainframe environments. GCOS 7 and GCOS 8 are separate branches of the operating system and continue to be developed alongside each other. (en)
