Lieutenant Colonel Georges Thenault (French pronunciation: [ʒɔʁʒ təno]) (15 December 1887 – 19 December 1948) was the commander of the Lafayette Escadrille – the famed branch of the French air force in World War I composed of American volunteer pilots. The Lafayette Escadrille was created before the United States gave up its neutrality and joined France and Britain in the war against Germany. Once the United States formally entered the war, the Lafayette Escadrille was absorbed into the U.S. Army. Promu capitaine en mai 1915, il commande l'escadrille La Fayette, une unité de l'armée de l'air française — puis de l'United States Army — composée de pilotes bénévoles américains et notamment active pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. Il est cité plusieurs fois à l'ordre de l'Armée, décoré de la Croix de guerre et nommé chevalier de la Légion d'honneur avec rang du 15 mars 1916 puis promu officier le 26 juin 1930. Nommé chef de bataillon après la guerre, il termine sa carrière lieutenant-colonel. Dans le film Flyboys (2006), son rôle est joué par Jean Reno. (fr) |
