The history of Korean animation, began with Japanese and American characters dominating the industry. The first sound animated character was created in 1936. The first Korean animation studio opened in Pyongyang in 1948. The first feature-length animated character appeared in 1967. Dooly the Little Dinosaur revolutionized the character market in 1987. As animation characters specific to Korea appeared, the Korean character market continued to grow. Since then, Korean character franchises have even exported their characters to other countries.

Durant les dècades del 1980 i 1990 el treball d'animació a Corea del Sud fou abundant amb la característica principal de ser el territori que alberga els estudis d'animació estrangers i no els natius. A la vegada fou un període de decadència per a l'animació pròpia. Aquesta situació canvià amb la substitució de Corea del Sud per altres països com Filipines, Xina i Índia. Des del 2003 les empreses d'animació coreanes han treballat junt a les xineses per a aconseguir l'emissió en horaris de màxima audiència: sent el primer exemple amb la col·laboració entre i Shanghai Animation Entertainment Studio. A la dècada del 2010 el llargmetratge de Sang-ho Yeon fou la primera pel·lícula coreana animada en participar en el Festival de Cannes. Moins prolifique en ce domaine que son voisin de l'Est le Japon, la Corée du Sud se spécialise cependant dans le sous-traitement de dessins animés américains ou japonais, domaine dans lequel elle a une clientèle grandissante. La Corée du Nord est également un sous-traitant important pour les studios occidentaux d'animation. Le Studios SEK est un studio nord-coréen, spécialisé dans la sous-traitance de l'animation, ayant participé à différents films réalisés par des studios de France ou des États-Unis.
