L'hopeïta és un mineral de la classe dels fosfats. Va ser descoberta l'any 1822 prop de Verviers (Bèlgica) i rep el seu nom de Thomas Charles Hope (1766-1844), professor de química de la Universitat d'Edimburg. Forma part i dona nom al grup hopeïta de minerals. També és coneguda amb el nom de hibbenita.

Hopeit entwickelt meist tafelige bis prismatische Kristalle, findet sich aber auch in Form büscheliger, strahliger oder massiger Mineral-Aggregate oder krustiger Überzüge. Sichtbare und unverwitterte Kristallflächen weisen einen glasähnlichen Glanz auf, Spaltflächen schimmern dagegen perlmuttartig. In reiner Form ist das Mineral farblos und durchsichtig. Durch vielfache Lichtbrechung aufgrund von Gitterbaufehlern oder multikristalliner Ausbildung kann es allerdings auch grauweiß erscheinen und durch Fremdbeimengungen eine gelbe bis orange Farbe annehmen. The minerals are formed through oxidation of sphalerite by the presence of phosphate-rich solutions It was first described in 1822 from Moresnet, Liège Province, Belgium and is named after Scottish chemist, Thomas Charles Hope (1766–1844) of the University of Edinburgh.
