- The Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara or Kelaniya Temple is a Buddhist temple in Kelaniya, Sri Lanka. It is located 11 km (6.8 mi) north-east of Colombo. The current chief incumbent (chief priest) is Venerable Professor Kollupitiye Mahinda Sangharakkhitha Thera. The temple has often been associated with the rise and fall of Sri Lanka, with the popular saying that as the Kelaniya temple rose, Sri Lanka rose and as it fell, the country and its administration fell. It has thus had a deep association with the political powers of the country. As such, the temple is frequently visited by politicians both government and opposition. This temple is located in the village of Kelaniya just a few kilometers away from Colombo and close-by to the Kelani River. It is famous for being visited by the Lord Buddha during his legendary visits to Sri Lanka. In the 15th century, when King Dhammaeti of Burma doubted the purity of the ordination in his country, he sent monks to Kelaniya to re-ordain under the Sri Lankan Sangha. The temple was destroyed by the Portuguese in the 16th century but rebuilt in the 18th century when the Island was under the tolerance Dutch. A prominent feature of the temple is a tall and graceful statue of Ganga the Goddess of the Ganges, India's most sacred river. It is also renowned for its extensive and beautiful wall murals depicting scenes of Buddhism's early history and development in Sri Lanka. (en)
