Kluning is the act of walking overland on ice skates. The word is derived from the Frisian word klune. In tour skating it is not always possible to travel the entire distance by skate. The ice under bridges might be too thin or kept open for transportational purposes. In this case, the skater is forced to take off his skates, walk a certain distance and put his skates back on to carry on his trip. 'Kluning' however makes it possible to win time by walking the distance on land on skates. Planks or mats are placed in advance, to avoid damage to the blades.

Zo is het ijs onder bruggen vaak te dun (of zelfs afwezig) of heeft de scheepvaart wateren open gehouden. Dit betekent dat de schaatser, als hij verder wil, op zulke stukken zijn schaatsen af zal moeten doen en over de wal om de hindernis heen zal moeten lopen. Om bij schaatsevenementen op natuurijs (zoals de Friese Elfstedentocht) de schaatsen te beschermen, worden er op dergelijke plaatsen planken en matten neergelegd, waarover de schaatser - met de schaatsen aan de voeten - kan lopen zonder dat de ijzers beschadigd raken. Daarnaast kan men ook speciale schaatsbeschermers om de schaatsen doen voor het klunen. Dit zijn rubberen hoezen die om de ijzers passen, zodat men op de schaatsen over stenen kan lopen zonder dat de ijzers beschadigd raken. Dit is handig als er geen planken of matten liggen.
