Cette liste dégonfle un peu l'impression que les villes chinoises regorgent toutes de millions d'habitants. cf. Liste des villes de Chine par nombre d'habitants. En effet si on s'attache à la population urbaine, les villes chinoises sont tout à fait comparables aux autres villes du monde en ce qui concerne leur population. Dans cette liste figurent les villes dans une perspective historique (sans leur énorme accroissement administratif en superficie), ce qui permet de se rendre compte de leur importance relative. (Par exemple Chongqing perd des places au classement, ce qui est plus conforme à sa véritable importance). Les conurbations telles que Zibo, Daqing n'ont pas été retenues car chacune des villes qui les composent est relativement peu peuplée.
