Maries Leben – über das nur wenige Daten bekannt sind – wurde durch ihre Familienbeziehungen, durch die Spannungen zwischen Frankreich und England, durch die Kreuzzüge als „Familienangelegenheit“ und nicht zuletzt durch die schwankende Königstreue ihres ersten Ehemannes Simon von Dammartin geprägt.
