It is one of the most widely used pesticides in the United States, with approximately 60 million pounds used in 2001. (en) Le métham sodium (ou méthylaminométhanedithioate de sodium, métham, carbathion, carbathione, carbothion, metam sodium, métamsodium ou metam-sodium) est l'un des biocides à très large spectre (il est à la fois pesticide, herbicide et fongicide), utilisé comme fumigant des sols.Il est habituellement appliqué sur le sol, sous une bâche, de manière à laisser le produit pénétrer le sol pour y tuer les parasites (mais aussi la plupart des organismes vivants), avec plus ou moins de succès selon la nature du sol (qui doit être bien perméable au gaz pour qu'il agisse). Très toxique pour la plupart des organismes, comme le bromure de méthyle qui avait des usages proches, il est interdit en Europe. Mais de nombreuses dérogations ont été accordées (dans une quinzaine de pays, par exemple en 2011) conformément à la réglementation qui demande d'apporter une preuve que le produit réponde à un besoin essentiel et que le pays demandeur étudie des alternatives (ex : allongement des rotations culturales, choix de variétés résistantes, agriculture bio…) et qu'il mette en œuvre un plan d'action en ce sens. Dans les années 2010, les horticulteurs et maraîchers français auraient utilisé environ 700 t/an de formulations à base de métham sodium. En 2018, ce produit n'est plus vendu en France que par la société indienne, une entreprise familiale (famille Shroff) devenue leader en agrochimie en Inde. Het wordt toegepast voor bodemontsmetting, door bodeminjectie of druppelirrigatie, drie à vier weken vóór het zaaien of planten. Het bestrijdt rondwormen (nematoden) en bepaalde bodemschimmels, evenals kiemende onkruiden. Na toepassing moet de bodem bij voorkeur met een gasdichte folie worden afgesloten, of anders moet de bovenste laag dichtgerold en bevochtigd worden. Metam-natrium ontbindt in de bodem namelijk tot het giftige en vluchtige (MITC), wat de biologisch actieve vorm is van het product. Dit is analoog aan de werking van dazomet. Metam-natrium kwam reeds in de jaren '50 van de 20e eeuw op de markt en wordt nog steeds op grote schaal toegepast in de land- en tuinbouw, sierteelt, boomkwekerijen en voor de ontsmetting van potgrond en teelaarde.
