총봉사자(라틴어: Minister generalis, 영어: Minister General)는 프란치스코회 계열의 종단의 지도자 직함이다. 다른 수도회의 (uperior General)에 대응하며, 프란치스코회에서만 사용하는 표현이다. 수도회를 세운 성 프란치스코에게까지 그 계보가 거슬러 올라간다. 프란치스코는 새로운 수도회가 보다 평등하기를 원했고, 지도자가 구성원들 위에 군주처럼 군림하기보다 봉사(ministry)하는 사람이기를 원했기에 이런 용어를 선택했다. 제8장에 그 지위가 규정되어 있다.

It is a term exclusive to them, and comes directly from its founder, St. Francis of Assisi. He chose this word over "Superior" out of his vision that the brothers of the Order were all to be equal, and that the friar supervising his brothers was to be a servant who cared for (ministered to) them, not one who lorded over them. The original term is minister generalis in Latin and is found in Chapter 8 of the Rule of St. Francis. The term is sometimes written as "General Minister", but this is the official form in the English language, in keeping with other official titles. Francis chose this term to designate the leaders of the various communities scattered around Europe even within his lifetime. In the 20th century, the term also came to be used as well by many religious congregations of the Third Order of St. Francis, in the effort to follow more closely the spirit of the founder of their Order. De uso exclusivo da ordem, o termo ministro vem diretamente do fundador, São Francisco de Assis, que, de acordo com sua visão de que os irmãos eram todos iguais, não gostava do termo "superior". Assim, os frades que supervisionavam os demais irmãos deveriam ser um servo que cuidava ("ministrava para") deles e não um superior.
