The Mont d'Ambin Base Tunnel, also known as the Mont Cenis Base Tunnel, is the largest engineering work of the Lyon–Turin rail link project. Once completed, it will facilitate the principal high speed rail link between Italy and France, conveying both high speed passenger trains and rail freight between the two countries. At 57.5 kilometres (35.7 mi), that tunnel will be the longest rail tunnel in the world, ahead of the 57.1 km (35.5 mi) Gotthard Base Tunnel. It represents one third of the estimated overall cost of the project and is the only part of the line where work has started. Crossing the Alps between the Susa Valley in Piedmont and Maurienne in Savoie. It has an estimated cost of €8 billion. During September 2016, a key agreement towards the tunnel's construction was reached by France and Italy. Three years later, competitive tenders to perform packaged elements of the construction work were sought. (en)
Le tunnel de base du Mont d'Ambin (dit aussi du mont Cenis) est l'ouvrage majeur du projet de ligne ferroviaire transalpine entre Lyon en France et Turin en Italie. Il doit son nom au mont Cenis, premier passage ouvert entre la France et l'Italie, ainsi que le nom du tunnel historique. À l'origine, il était nommé "Tunnel mont d'Ambin", près duquel sont effectués les premiers forages dans la vallée d'Étache, sur la commune de Bramans à la frontière franco-italienne. Par décret en Conseil d'État du 18 décembre 2007, la partie française de la section transfrontalière est déclarée d'utilité publique. Les travaux de reconnaissance démarrent côté français en 2002 avec l'excavation de la descenderie de Villarodin-Bourget/Modane, puis de celles de Saint-Martin-de-la-Porte en 2003 et de La Praz en 2005, ainsi que côté italien avec la descenderie et galerie de reconnaissance de La Maddalena (ou Chiomonte) en 2011. De Mont d'Ambin-basistunnel is een spoorwegtunnel in aanleg, een basistunnel onder de Dents d'Ambin en de Mont d'Ambin op de grens tussen het Franse departement Savoie en de Italiaanse regio Piëmont. De tunnel is een onderdeel van de geplande internationale hogesnelheidslijn tussen Lyon en Turijn waarvan het ook het uitgesproken duurste en bouwtechnisch ingewikkeldste onderdeel vormt. De Mont d'Ambin-basistunnel is de vervanging en capaciteitsuitbreiding van de Fréjustunnel, een spoortunnel uit 1871. Omdat de Mont d'Ambin onderdeel is van het Mont-Cenismassief, wordt hij ook soms Mont Cenis-basistunnel genoemd. (nl)
