Sie gehört zum Arrondissement Sarreguemines und zum Kanton Bitche. Mit 1621 Einwohnern (Stand 1. Januar 2019) ist Montbronn nach Bitsch und Rohrbach die drittgrößte Gemeinde des Bitscher Landes. Die Einwohner nennen sich auf Französisch Montbronnois, auf Deutsch Mombronner und im örtlichen rheinfränkischen Dialekt Mummerer. In dieser deutsch-lothringischen Regionalsprache werden sie auch als Hätsche, Moren oder Viehvolk bezeichnet. Bourg de Lorraine, du pays de Bitche et du bassin de vie de la Moselle-est, Montbronn est situé à 56 km au nord-ouest de Strasbourg, dans le terroir du parc naturel régional des Vosges du Nord. Au niveau intercommunal, la municipalité est intégrée dans la communauté de communes du Pays de Bitche qui regroupe 46 localités autour de Bitche. En 2019, la population légale est de 1 621 habitants, appelés les Montbronnois, qui font de Montbronn le 3e village le plus peuplé du pays de Bitche après Bitche et Rohrbach. Montbronn est attesté dans les textes d'archives dès le XIIe siècle. Dépendante du Saint-Empire, la localité est successivement la propriété des seigneurs de Bitche du duché de Lorraine (XIIe siècle), des seigneurs de Lichtenberg (1258), des comtes de Lützelstein (1324), des comtes palatins du Rhin (1452), des princes de Phalsbourg et Lixheim (1629) et à nouveau des ducs de Lorraine (1707). Durant la guerre de Trente Ans, la population souffre des multiples passages de troupes et sort du conflit exsangue et décimée. La paix retrouvée, des migrants, sud-tyroliens pour la plupart, participent au redressement de la communauté. Le village devient français en 1766 sous Louis XV avec le rattachement du duché de Lorraine au royaume de France. Comme le reste de la Moselle, Montbronn devient allemand durant la période du Reichsland (1871-1918) puis lors de l'occupation nazie (1940-1945).
