Verwandt ist der Begriff des Overcrowdings („Übergedränge“), der die Überfüllung von stark besuchten touristischen Destinationen (Zielen) beschreibt. „Overtourism“ wird auch als Steigerung des Massentourismus bezeichnet. Als oorzaken worden onder meer genoemd: goedkope vluchten door de opkomst van lagekostenluchtvaartmaatschappijen, de geconcentreerde instroom van een groot aantal toeristen bij het aanleggen van cruiseschepen, en de explosieve groei van online marktplaatsen voor vakantieverhuring zoals Airbnb.
