It has been suggested that they survived the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event. The Peltaspermales are divided into two main families, the Peltaspermaceae and the Corystospermaceae. Along these, two informal groups (the "" and the "") of uncertain taxonomic affinities exist, each centered around a specific genus ; Supaia and Comia. In 2009, a new genus from the Lower Permian/Leonardian Clear Fork Group was erected and named .
