Electric pulse fishing should not be confused with pulse fishing, which is a fisheries management technique for preventing fish stocks from being overfished by periodically permitting a cycle of fishing followed by a fallow period which allows stocks to reconstitute. L'Union européenne l'a interdite puis a accordé quelques dérogations pour des pratiques expérimentales, à la demande de représentants de la filière pêche néerlandaise. Dans le cadre d'une proposition de règlement par la Commission européenne, le Parlement européen a demandé son interdiction totale en rendant sa première position. Le sujet est actuellement en négociation interinstitutionnelle. De pulskorvisserij is met name gericht op de platvis tong, met als bijvangst schol. Daarnaast wordt het ook op beperkte schaal toegepast bij de visserij op garnalen.
