En tipografía, un punzón es una pieza de metal duro (generalmente, de acero) tallado en cuya superficie aparece en relieve la forma de una letra. Visto de frente, el dibujo de la letra en el punzón aparece de manera reflejada respecto al resultado final impreso. La fabricación de punzones era la primera etapa en el proceso físico de impresión en una imprenta tradicional.

In Frankreich waren Claude Garamond (um 1500–1561) und die Familie Didot berühmt während in England William Caslon (1692–1766), von dem vor allem seine prachtvolle Antiqua Beliebtheit erlangte, und John Baskerville (1706–1775) am Werk waren. Der Begriff findet sich heute noch im Wort Schriftschnitt als Bezeichnung für Unterarten einer Schriftfamilie, z. B. kursiver Schnitt, fetter Schnitt usw. Zur Verbesserung der Lesbarkeit wurden Schriftschnitte in verschiedenen Größen mit unterschiedlichen Proportionen gefertigt und jeder Druckstabe so auf den Schriftkegel gesetzt, dass sich ein gleichmäßiges Schriftbild ergab, wobei auch Unterschneidungen zahlreicher Buchstabenpaare (z. B. V-A, P-e, f-o) berücksichtigt wurden. Die Dickte und der Stand auf dem Schriftkegel waren daher für jedes Zeichen eines Schriftschnitts individuell. Steel punches in the shape of the letter would be used to stamp matrices into copper, which were locked into a mould shape to cast type. Cutting punches and casting type was the first step of traditional typesetting. The cutting of letter punches was a highly skilled craft requiring much patience and practice. Often the designer of the type would not be personally involved in the cutting. The initial design for type would be two-dimensional, but a punch has depth, and the three-dimensional shape of the punch, as well as factors such as the angle and depth to which it was driven into the matrix, would affect the appearance of the type on the page. The angle of the side of the punch was particularly significant.
