Akcidenční písmo (z lat. accidens = přihazující se; angl. display type, fr. caractère d’affiches, něm. Akzidenzschrift) je písmo pro sazbu příležitostných tiskovin, inzerátů, titulků v novinové či časopisecké sazbě. Jedná se především o tučné antikvy, grotesky, egyptienky a veškerá písma psaná a zdobená. Tato písma mají určitou nápadnost a výraznou kresbu. Opakem akcidenčního písma je chlebové písmo, které je určené pro běžnou sazbu dlouhých textů. Typickým chlebovým fontem je např. Times New Roman 10 p.

Display typefaces will often have more eccentric and variable designs than the simple, relatively restrained typefaces generally used for body text. They may take inspiration from other genres of lettering, such as handpainted signs, calligraphy or an aesthetic appropriate to their use, perhaps ornamented, exotic, abstracted or drawn in the style of a different writing system. Several genres of font are particularly associated with display setting, such as slab serif, script font, reverse-contrast and to a lesser extent sans serif. Walter Tracy defines display typefaces in the metal type sense as "sizes of type over 14 point" and in design that "text types when enlarged can be used for headings, display types, if reduced, cannot be used for text setting." Titling fonts are a subset of display typefaces which are typically used for headlines and titles. They are often only uppercase, and have stroke widths optimized for large sizes. Les caractères de titrage apparaissent à la fin du XVIIIe siècle et au début du XIXe siècle avec le développement de la presse écrite : auparavant, on n'utilisait dans les intitulés des articles que des caractères communs agrandis. Répondant à une exigence de grande à distance, ils se composent de lettres massives avec beaucoup de graisse, présentant souvent des empattements larges et carrés qui rappellent les lourdes machines de l'Ère industrielle naissante dans laquelle ils surgissent, ce qui vaut à beaucoup de polices de ce genre d'être appelées « mécanes » par Maximilien Vox quand il établit la classification Vox-Atypi. Un bon exemple de caractère de titrage est le Clarendon dessiné par en 1845 pour la Fann Street Foundry et qui a depuis lors beaucoup servi pour les titres sur les pochettes de disques de jazz et de blues, notamment.
