- Raed Arafat (Arabic: رائد عرفات; Romanian pronunciation: [raˈed araˈfat], first name also spelled Rayed; born May 24, 1964) is a Syrian-born Romanian intensive care physician of Palestinian origin, specialised in anesthesiology. He founded the Mobile Emergency Service for Resuscitation and Extrication (SMURD) with the help from the Romanian Fire Fighting Brigade represented by Lt.-Col Mircea Pintilie. He was also the coordinator of Mureș County Emergency Services until 23 August 2007, when he was invited to take the position of Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Health to deal with the development of emergency medical care in Romania. He was also, for a short period, the Minister of Health (7 November-21 December 2012), serving many years as Under-Secretary of State for Health in the Romanian Government. He accepted the position of Minister of Health just as a temporary position after which he was nominated as State Secretary at the Ministry of Health until 28 January 2014 when he accepted to move as Secretary of State at the Ministry of Internal Affairs to head the newly created Department for Emergency Situations under which all emergency services are coordinated including fire and rescue, civil protection, prehospital medical emergency response, air rescue and emergency departments. He is still serving at the Ministry of Internal Affairs in this position. (en)
- Raed Arafat (Damasco, 24 maggio 1964) è un medico e politico rumeno di origine palestinese nato in Siria. Trasferitosi in Romania dalla Cisgiordania nel 1981, si laureò in medicina e divenne uno dei massimi esperti di medicina d'urgenza a livello europeo. Nel 1990 pose le basi a Târgu Mureș per la fondazione del Servizio medico urgente di rianimazione ed estricazione (SMURD), servizio di primo soccorso per situazioni di particolare urgenza parallelo a quello gestito dal servizio sanitario nazionale, che nel 2007 fu esteso a tutto il paese. In seguito all'ampliamento del raggio di azione dello SMURD, dal 2007 al 2014 Arafat fu sottosegretario e segretario di stato presso il ministero della salute. Nel 2012 fu al centro delle polemiche per la sua ferma opposizione alla riforma della sanità progettata dal governo di Emil Boc e sostenuta dal presidente della repubblica Traian Băsescu, divenendo un personaggio simbolo delle proteste in Romania di quell'anno. Per un breve periodo fu anche ministro della salute sotto il governo Ponta I nel 2012. Nel 2014 fu indicato come segretario di stato del ministero degli interni, rivestendo la funzione di capo del neonato Dipartimento per le situazioni di urgenza (DSU), organo di coordinamento generale tra l'Ispettorato per le situazioni di urgenza, l'Ispettorato generale per l'aviazione e le unità di pronto intervento sul territorio. - Raed Arafat (arabiska: رائد عرفات), född 24 maj 1964 i Damaskus, Syrien, är en rumänsk-palestinsk läkare och politiker. Han innehar posten som statssekreterare på Rumäniens hälsoministerium sedan 22 december 2012. Arafat föddes i Damaskus av palestinska föräldrar och växte upp i Nablus på Västbanken. 1981 flyttade han till staden Pitești i Rumänien. Han studerade medicin vid universiteten i Cluj-Napoca och Târgu Mureș och specialiserade sig inom anestesiologi. Efter rumänska revolutionen 1989 öppnade han en akutmottagning i Târgu Mureș och 1991 startade han ambulansverksamheten , vilken han arbetade för fram tills 1998 då han mottog rumänskt medborgarskap. 23 augusti 2007 utsågs Arafat till statssekreterare vid hälsoministeriet, en post han hade fram tills 10 januari 2012 då han avgick i protest mot en hälsoreform. Hälsoreformen drogs dock tillbaka och Arafat återkom som statssekreterare 17 januari samma år. 7 november 2012 utsågs han till Rumäniens hälsominister, men avgick 21 december i samband med det .
