The god is known by different names such as Murugan, Kandaswamy, Kartikeya, Skanda, Vadivela at various temples. The six most sacred abodes of Murugan was mentioned in Tamil sangam literature, Thirumurugatrupadai, written by Nakkeerar and in Thiruppugazh, written by Arunagirinathar.
