Nachdem Autoren wie der Kinderarzt L. Emmett Holt und der Psychologe John B. Watson in der ersten Hälfte des Jahrhunderts mit Erfolg dafür geworben hatten, dass Babys möglichst wenig Körperkontakt erhalten und nach einem strikten Zeitplan gefüttert und zur Sauberkeit erzogen werden sollten, lehrte Spock, dessen wissenschaftlicher Hintergrund die Psychoanalyse Sigmund Freuds war, vom Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges an, dass Eltern ihr Kind im Gegenteil mit Liebe und Wärme aufziehen und sich auf ihre Intuition verlassen sollten. Das Werk wurde im Laufe der Jahrzehnte immer wieder überarbeitet, aktualisiert und unter abweichenden Titeln neu aufgelegt.
