Thomas Burnet (c.1635, - † 1715) fou un escriptor anglès conegut pels seus escrits sobre teologia i cosmogonia. Va estudiar a l'Escola de Gramàtica Northallerton, i després al Clare Hall, Cambridge, el 1651. Fou deixeble de , i després alumne del Christ's College de la Universitat de Cambridge, on es graduà. Es va oposar a Jaume II d'Anglaterra, després de la Revolució Gloriosa, fou capellà ordinari de Guillem III d'Anglaterra.

Sein schriftstellerischer Erfolg beruht auf seiner Telluris Theoria Sacra, auch Sacred Theory of the Earth, die zunächst auf Latein und später in englischer Sprache veröffentlicht wurde – ein Werk, das ohne wissenschaftliche Kenntnisse der Struktur der Erde verfasst wurde und insofern in erster Linie eine spekulative Kosmogonie darstellt. Einige seiner in einem späteren Werk dargelegten Ansichten, der Archaeologiae Philosophicae, waren für die zeitgenössischen Theologen jedoch derart unakzeptabel, dass Burnet seinen Posten bei Hof aufgeben musste. In Telluris Theoria Sacra vertritt er die Ansicht, die Welt sei von Gott zwar in schöner und regelmäßiger Form geschaffen worden, jedoch habe sich diese bei der Sintflut in ihre heutige hässliche Form verändert. Felsen und Berge seien das in dieser Hinsicht am stärksten Deformierte. Eine solche Landschaft erwecke einen erhabenen Eindruck. Nach ihm ist der Dorsa Burnet auf dem Erdmond benannt. Empleado con Lord Wiltshire, y como tutor de Lord Ossory, nieto de James Butler, primer Duque de Ormonde, logró un importante nombramiento en la Charterhouse School. Opuesto a Jacobo II, tras la Revolución Gloriosa, fue capellán ordinario de Guillermo III. Murió en 1715, tras haber mantenido su trabajo y residencia en Charterhouse School. Allí fue inhumado.
