Els Tobíades són una família jueva establerta des del segle vi aC a Transjordània i d'origen molt antic. Un tipus bastit a partir l'aristocràcia nativa integrada en el món hel·lenístic. El destí d'aquesta família fascina als contemporanis: Flavius Josephus s'hi refereix àmpliament, i s'inspira probablement en el llibre de Tobies de la Bíblia.

(fr) The Tobiads were a Jewish faction in Ammon at the beginning of the Hasmonean period. They were philhellene, supporters of Hellenistic Judaism, in the early years of the 2nd century BCE. What is known about the Tobiads is a combination of statements of Josephus (Antiquities of the Jews xii. 160-236) and of 2 Maccabees 3:11. There are two accounts, both legendary, the hero of the one being Joseph, and of the other, Hyrcanus. (en) Tobia was gouverneur van de Ptolemeese kolonie in Transjordanië (in het gebied dat voorheen aan de Ammonieten toebehoorde), in de 3e eeuw v.Chr. De familie van de Tobiaden is naar hem genoemd. Gewoonlijk neemt men aan dat hij afstamt van de Tobia die in de tijd van de Perzen gouverneur van Ammon was. De familie van Tobia had veel bezittingen in het gebied van Ammon. In Qasr al Abd is een fort teruggevonden dat aan Tobia en zijn familie heeft toebehoord. Bij een grot die bij het fort hoort is een inscriptie van de naam Tobia aangetroffen. Volgens sommigen moet de inscriptie gedateerd worden in de 3e eeuw v.Chr., maar anderen menen dat een datering van de inscriptie niet met zekerheid is vast te stellen. In de Zenon papyri is correspondentie teruggevonden tussen deze Tobia (met zijn titel 'gouverneur van Ammon') en Appollonius, de minister van financiën van Ptolemaeus II Philadelphus, waarin slaven en dieren genoemd worden die Tobia aan Ptolemaeus schenkt. Tobia was getrouwd met een zus van Onias II. Toen Onias II weigerde belasting aan Ptolemaeus af te dragen, ontstond een hevig conflict tussen Onias en Tobia, die van mening was dat Onias Juda hiermee in het ongeluk stortte. Uiteindelijk ging Tobia's zoon naar Ptolemaeus, waar hij het recht kreeg in Palestina belastingen te innen.
