The structural chemistry resembles that observed for molybdenum(II) chloride. Tungsten(II) chloride is prepared by reduction of the hexachloride. Bismuth is a typical reductant: 6 WCl6 + 8 Bi → W6Cl12 + 8 BiCl3.
