Consiste en cuentos sobre varias deidades, seres, criaturas legendarias, héroes y cuentos populares de varios grupos étnicos. Algunos de estos mitos cruzaron el Atlántico durante el período del comercio transatlántico de esclavos y se hicieron parte de las mitologías caribeña, cubana y brasileña.​ Los mitos escritos de África occidental no se establecieron hasta el siglo XIX.​La mayoría de los mitos se transmitieron oralmente de generación a generación. Estos mitos fueron narrados por cuentacuentos y abuelos. También son narrados por los griots de Malí y Senegal, Níger y el norte de Nigeria. ​ (es) West African mythology is the body of myths of the people of West Africa. It consists of tales of various deities, beings, legendary creatures, heroes and folktales from various ethnic groups. Some of these myths traveled across the Atlantic during the period of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade to become part of Caribbean, Cuban and Brazilian mythology. Written myths from West Africa were not established until the 1800s. Most myths were passed from one generation to another orally. These myths were told by storytellers and grandparents. It is also told by griots in Mali and Senegal, Niger and northern Nigeria. (en)
