El Willys MB era un automòbil tot terreny, no basat en vehicle comercial, sens tracció a les quatre rodes (excepte alguns models), adoptat en 1941 per l'Exèrcit dels Estats Units. Va ser desenvolupat a partir de 1940 seguint requeriments militars d'un tractor multifuncional amb un pes inferior a 1.000 quilos i velocitat superior a 80 km/h destinat a tasques de transport, enllaç i exploració per carretera i camp a través. Si bé va ser la petita companyia Bantam de Pennsilvània què va desenvolupar el primer prototip, l'Exèrcit va animar a Ford i Willys Overland a presentar els seus sobre la base del Bantam. El prototip de Bantam era el de menys cost, mentre que el de Willys era el més potent, i el de Ford el que major comoditat de conducció presentava (palanca de canvis, seients, etc.). En un polèmic concurs amb interessos comercials pel mig finalment es va encarregar a aquestes dues últimes la producció del vehicle, unint el millor de cada prototip, adduint la seva major capacitat de producció. Tots ells diferien en petits detalls sent el més conegut el Willys per la seva característica calandra amb els fars integrats i capot pla. El model final comptava amb parabrisa abatible, capacitat (en principi) per a cinc ocupants, no tenia portes, era descobert, encara que disposava d'una capota. Gràcies a la seva agilitat, versatilitat, tracció en terreny enfangat, pantanós, o gelat, robustesa i resistència a les pitjors condicions climatològiques, va tenir múltiples utilitats. Va servir com a ambulància, com a cotxe de comandament i exploració amb una metralladora browning en la seva caixa posterior, com a suport de llançacoets i morters, com a camió de bombers en portaavions, com remolcador de peces d'artilleria, vehicle de control aeri en aeròdroms, vehicle base per tropes paracaigudistes, portant cable telefònic, amb sis rodes per patrulla de la Guàrdia Costanera, etc. A més, al teatre d'operacions de Birmània va ser adaptat com a locomotora, i el SAS britànic ho va utilitzar en substitució dels seus inicials camions al nord d'Àfrica i posteriorment a França com a vehicle d'assalt per atacar bases i combois armant amb metralladores antiaèries. Posteriorment, el 1942 es va produir una versió amfíbia. Si bé, de menys èxit que el seu germà gran, va ser bastant útil per als soviètics. D'acord amb la va ser subministrat en grans quantitats a la Gran Bretanya (debutant en la campanya del Nord d'Àfrica amb excel·lents resultats) i la Unió Soviètica, contribuint en gran manera a la motorització l'Exèrcit Roig, on també la va fer la seva pròpia versió. Willys MB a Ford GPW, oba s formálním názvem U.S. Army Truck, 1⁄4-ton, 4×4, Command Reconnaissance běžně známý jako Jeep Willys, Jeep nebo jeep (česky džíp) a někdy označovaný jako G503, bylo velmi úspěšné americké offroadové lehké vojenské užitkové vozidlo vyráběné ve velkých počtech podle standardizované konstrukce pro USA a další spojenecké síly za druhé světové války mezi lety 1941 až 1945. Džíp se stal hlavním lehkým kolovým dopravním prostředkem americké armády a jejích spojenců, kdy jej prezident Eisenhower jednou nazval „jednou ze tří rozhodujících zbraní, které USA během druhé světové války měly.“ Šlo o první sériově vyráběný vůz s pohonem všech čtyř kol na světě. Su diseño no estaba basado en ninguna otra clase de vehículo, siendo concebido como respuesta a un llamamiento realizado en 1941 por el alto mando militar estadounidense, con el fin de proveer a sus tropas de un vehículo ligero y de tracción integral, para el traslado de los soldados por el frente de batalla, sobre cualquier tipo de terreno. The Willys MB and the Ford GPW, both formally called the U.S. Army Truck, 1⁄4-ton, 4×4, Command Reconnaissance, commonly known as the Willys Jeep, Jeep, or jeep, and sometimes referred to by its supply catalogue designation G503, were highly successful American off-road capable light military utility vehicles, built in large numbers to a single standardized design, for the United States and the Allied forces in World War II from 1941 until 1945. The jeep became the primary light-wheeled multi-role vehicle of the United States military and its allies, with President Eisenhower once calling it "one of three decisive weapons the U.S. had during WWII." It was the world's first mass-produced light four-wheel drive car. With almost 650,000 units built, the jeep constituted a quarter of the total U.S. non-combat motor vehicles produced during the war, or almost two-thirds of the 988,000 light 4WD vehicles produced, when counted together with the Dodge WC series. Large numbers of jeeps were provided to U.S. allies, including the Soviet Union at the time. Aside from large amounts of 11⁄2- and 21⁄2‑ton trucks, and 25,000 3⁄4‑ton Dodges – some 50,000 1⁄4‑ton jeeps were shipped to help Russia during WWII – against Nazi-Germany's total production of just over 50,000 Kübelwagens, the jeep's primary counterpart. Historian Charles K. Hyde wrote: "In many respects, the jeep became the iconic vehicle of World War II, with an almost mythological reputation of toughness, durability, and versatility." Not only did it become the workhorse of the American military, as it replaced the use of horses and other draft animals (still heavily used in World War I) in every role, from cavalry units to supply trains, but improvised field modifications also made the jeep capable of just about any other function G.I.s could think of. Moreover: military jeeps were adopted by countries all over the world, to this day – so much that they have become the most widely used and recognizable military vehicle in history. Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe in World War II, wrote in his memoirs that most senior officers regarded it as one of the five pieces of equipment most vital to success in Africa and Europe. General George Marshall, Chief of Staff of the US Army during the war, called the vehicle "America's greatest contribution to modern warfare." In 1991, the MB Jeep was designated an "International Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark" by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. After WWII, the original jeep continued to serve, in the Korean War and other conflicts, until it was updated in the form of the M38 Willys MC and M38A1 Willys MD (in 1949 and 1952 respectively), and received a complete redesign by Ford in the form of the 1960-introduced M151 jeep. Its influence, however, was much greater than that — manufacturers around the world began building jeeps and similar designs, either under license or not — at first primarily for military purposes, but later also for the civilian market. Willys turned the MB into the civilian Jeep CJ-2A in 1945, making the world's first mass-produced civilian four-wheel drive. The "Jeep" name was trademarked, and grew into a successful, and highly valued brand. The success of the jeep inspired both an entire category of recreational 4WDs and SUVs, making "four-wheel drive" a household term, and numerous incarnations of military light utility vehicles. In 2010, the American Enterprise Institute called the jeep "one of the most influential designs in automotive history". Its "sardine tin on wheels" silhouette and slotted grille are perhaps even more instantly recognizable than the VW Beetle, and it has evolved into the currently produced Jeep Wrangler still largely designed like the original jeep design.
