Die Wrenboys („Zaunkönig-Jungen“) sind ein traditioneller Teil der Feierlichkeiten am zweiten Weihnachtsfeiertag in Irland. Am 26. Dezember wird hier der Wren Day oder Hunt the Wren Day (Irisch: Lá an Dreoilín) gefeiert. Verkleidet mit Kostümen aus Stroh, Masken, Hüten und bunten Gewändern ziehen die Wren Boys musizierend durch die Straßen und bitten um Spenden für wohltätige Zwecke. Diese Tradition existiert auch in anderen Teilen der Britischen Inseln wie in Wales. Vermutlich ist diese Feier keltischen Ursprungs. (de) Is éard atá i gceist le Lucht an dreoilín ná cleamairí a cheiliúireann Lá Fhéile Stiofán nó lá an dreoilín.In Éirinn, tugtar Lá an Dreoilín ar an 26 Nollaig, nó Lá Fhéile Stiofáin. Is traidisiún in Éirinn é, agus tá an Dreoilín á gceiliúradh sa Bhreatain freisin, go mór mhór sa Bhreatain Bheag. Sean-traidisiún atá i Lá an Dreoilín agus tá baint ag an Lá le miotaseolaíocht na gCeilteach. Bíonn go leor seó agus searmanais ag baint le ceiliúradh na féile seo. Téann "Lucht an dreoilín" ó theach go teach (nó ó theach tábhairne go teach tábhairneǃ) ag déanamh ceoil in onóir an dreoilín, agus b'fhéidir ag bailiú airgid agus bia. Iompraíonn an lucht ceoil, a chuireann seanéadaí nó clúdach tuí orthu féin, íomhá dreoilín nó dreoilín ina bheo i mbosca. Cé nach bhfuil an traidisiún chomh láidir agus chomh feiceálach in Éirinn anois agus a bhí, tá daoine ann atá ag iarraidh an traidisiún a thabhairt ar ais arís. (ga) Wren Day, also known as Wren's Day, Day of the Wren, or Hunt the Wren Day (Irish: Lá an Dreoilín), is an Irish celebration held on 26 December, St. Stephen's Day in a number of countries across Europe. The tradition consists of "hunting" a wren (now a fake wren but previously a real one) and putting it on top of a decorated pole. Then the crowds of mummers, or strawboys, celebrate the wren (also pronounced wran) by dressing up in masks, straw suits, and colourful motley clothing. They form music bands and parade through towns and villages. These crowds are sometimes called the wrenboys. The tradition is closely related to Hunt the Wren on the Isle of Man, and versions may have been practised across the British Isles in the past. (en) |
