Utopiâ kak model' mira granicy i pogranič'â literaturnogo âvleniâ

This monograph reinvents utopia as a world model whose generic boundaries have always been transcended to ensure contact with other forms of expression (primarily, the scientific and philosophical tract, the novel, the musical composition, and the painting). Such transgressions place utopia in the borderlands with other articulations of social improvement, the latter of which supply the most current understandings of the world. Utopia’s existence outside fixed boundaries (such as conventionally marked by closed space, cyclical time, didacticism, uniformity of described social relations, absence of conflict) allows it an effective rethinking and reconstitution of itself into a world model. Being a borderland phenomenon, utopia is open and dynamic, even though it may have a certain structure. This monograph aims to explore the genesis and morphological features of utopia, as well as the transformation of these features in English utopian fiction in the 1870s-1960s. We thus investigate the changes that the morphology of classical utopia undergoes before and after the emergence of modern utopia in the 1900s work of H. G. Wells, and prior to the rise of critical utopias in 1970s US literature, as defined by Tom Moylan. Our comparative and contextual analysis of the writing of Samuel Butler and Aldous Huxley enables us to fill in the gap not only in the history of utopia, but also in the history of ideologies dominant at the time. Apart from examining the generic boundaries of utopia at different moments of its development, this monograph is equally concerned with the borderlands of this literary phenomenon, which reaffirm its connection with the radical imagination.

Celem niniejszej monografii jest uzasadnienie pojęcia utopii jako modelu świata. Cel ten jest określony koniecznością przeniesienia utopii poza granice gatunku, dla którego typowymi wyznacznikami są: zamknięta przestrzeń, czas cykliczny, dydaktyczny patos, jednorodność przedstawianych stosunków społecznych oraz brak konfliktów, a tym samym zaprezentowanie jej jako zjawiska, które jest uwarunkowane dynamiką historii. W takich właśnie pograniczach realizuje się potencjał utopii, otwierający nowy horyzont dla wyobraźni na każdym stadium rozwoju społeczeństwa. Dlatego utopia nie będzie tu rozumiana jako zespół cech stałych i typowych dla tego gatunku, lecz jako zestaw właściwości podlegających historycznym zmianom. Dla nas utopia nie jest produktem końcowym, projektem lub instrukcją działania, lecz procesem wyjaśnienia w tekstach kultury – od artystycznych (literackich, muzycznych, graficznych) po naukowe – tego, jak udoskonalić modele dobrobytu całego świata. Utopia nie odzwierciedla interesów wybranych osób, grup oraz warstw społecznych lub państw. Celem utopii nie jest wykreowanie, ani też budowa idealnego społeczeństwa. Naszym zadaniem jest uściślenie, jaką genezę posiada utopia i czym się charakteryzuje jej gatunkowa budowa morfologiczna. Prześledzimy, jak owe cechy funkcjonują i w jaki sposób podlegają transformacji w literaturze angielskiej, która powstawała w latach 1870-1960. Ujawnimy proces wspomnianych zmian na każdym poziomie morfologicznym utopii klasycznej, przed i po powstaniu pojęcia współczesnej utopii, a także przed pojawieniem się utopii krytycznej, nierozerwalnie związanej z ideami Herberta Wellsa. Komparatystyczna i kontekstualna analiza powieści Samuela Butlera i Aldousa Huxley’ego pozwoli odtworzyć brakujące ogniwo nie tylko w historii utopii, ale także w historii instrukcji ideologicznych, które przeczą utopii. Oprócz analizy granic gatunku jakim jest utopia (na różnych etapach jej rozwoju), będą nas interesowały również pogranicza omawianego zjawiska literackiego, poprzez jego związek z wyobraźnią radykalną
